Reflection
When our eyes, our hands, and our awareness come together at the
point where the tip of the brush touches the paper, something quietly
changes. In that moment, regrets about the past and anxieties about
the future gently fall away.
Settling the mind on drawing a single line is a simple yet profound
practice. It requires continuous awareness, yet it is uncomplicated
enough that it does not invite unnecessary thinking.
When the mind is completely present in the act of drawing a line, there
is no room for distracting thoughts. In that moment of undivided
attention, the mind's naturally tranquil quality begins to reveal itself.
This tranquillity is not something we create. It is the mind's original
nature, becoming apparent as the thoughts and delusions that obscure
it temporarily recede.
If you can bring the same complete attention to the second line as you
did to the first, and then to the third, every line can be drawn with the
same quiet serenity.
Keep drawing.
The goal is not to produce many lines, nor to create a beautiful picture.
The invitation is simply to meet each new stroke with the same
freshness, curiosity, and undivided awareness. as the very first.
Perhaps this is where art quietly becomes meditation.
